Graham Norton’s comments came as he and his podcast co-host, Maria McErlane, debated what people should say to their friends who have decided to go under the knife.

Graham Norton, who gets the opportunity to meet and interview many high profile Hollywood stars on his BBC chat show, has suggested that “someone should just step in”, as he unleashed a dig at LA-based celebrities.
His remarks came to light as he and his podcast co-host read a letter from a listener, explaining that a friend had decided to go under the knife and get both a boob job and plastic surgery on her nose.
She asked Graham and Maria McErlane to weigh in on the prospect. Maria joked: “Keep your wonky nose out of her business”. Laughing, The Graham Norton Show host also playfully suggested she keep her “ugly, ill-formed nose out”, before taking a more serious approach to the topic.
Speaking in an episode of the Wanging On podcast, Graham said: “She told you she was getting a boob job over a year ago. Boobs have not been touched. I think she’s just coming up with a shopping list of things she’d like to have done.
“You know, and people do, you know, we all talk about what we’d like to have done, but then don’t do it.” He added that, ultimately, it was her friend’s choice, but she will have to tell her she looks great “no matter what”.
He then spoke about plastic surgery culture in Tinseltown: “You know, everyone in LA is telling each other they all look great. Whereas actually, someone should just step in and go, ‘You all look like you’ve escaped a hotel fire’, but nobody says that.”
Maria also revealed that Graham had aimed another dig at an unnamed person’s cosmetic surgery. “I think you said the other day, you made a quote the other day. I can’t remember who you were talking about.
“‘Looks like some skin has been stretched over a light bulb’. That’s a really good image to have in your mind.”
Maria suggested that plastic surgery could be “addictive”. She thoughtfully added: “Whatever you do to the exterior, you are still the same person inside. And quite often people think that fixing the outside as they see it will somehow fix the unhappiness inside. And it doesn’t.”
It comes after Graham revealed that he was once close friends with Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher, whom he met while filming Ruby Wax’s BBC Two series, Ruby.
But the iconic TV presenter apparently “didn’t really care” for the sci-fi favourite growing up.
In May, he said in a separate episode of the podcast: “I didn’t really care about Star Wars at all, but years later, there was a time where Ruby Wax did this chat show where it was kind of a dinner table and Ruby had people and you chatted to each other.
“I was doing one with Ruby and it was the first time I ever met Carrie Fisher and so before the show, Ruby said to me, ‘Look, I know Carrie, so I can’t ask her about Star Wars, can you ask the Star Wars questions?’
“And so I did, and from that day on, Carrie thought I was a fan of Star Wars and I never told her that I could not have cared less for Star Wars.”
He added that this led Carrie to spill the “whole plot” of an upcoming Star Wars film to him, despite there being “secrecy” about the instalment.
