Tom Cruise is doing something very different with his next movie, Digger, but apparently some fans thought he was going even further off the rails and making a musical.
That strange theory started making the rounds after viewers spotted what appeared to be people singing in footage from the upcoming black comedy. From there, social media did what social media does, and suddenly there was speculation that Digger had secretly been a musical this whole time.
Well, Guillermo del Toro has seen the movie, and he’s putting that rumor to rest. The Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker responded to the speculation on X while also dropping a pretty encouraging mini-review of the film:
“Music? It’s not… But it’s great,”
So no, Digger isn’t a musical. More importantly, del Toro apparently thinks the movie is great, which is a nice bit of early praise considering reviews haven’t started coming in yet.
Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon described as the most powerful man on Earth. The black comedy follows Rockwell as he attempts to save humanity from a disaster that he created himself.
That story is a wild playground for Cruise and Iñárritu, especially with Cruise undergoing a major physical transformation for the character. He actually looks his actual age in the film! The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, and Sandra Hüller.
Cruise previously talked about just how unusual the experience was for both him and Iñárritu, saying: “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way. And neither has Alejandro when we went in – ever. When you see this film, it’s totally original.”
Cruise calling a movie “totally original” certainly gets my attention, especially when he’s working with a filmmaker like Iñárritu and taking on a bizarre character like Digger Rockwell.
Whatever Digger ends up being, we can apparently cross “secret Tom Cruise musical” off the list.
Digger hits theaters on October 2.
