James Gunn has teased that the biggest “blackest night” in Lanterns has not happened yet. His latest post has now given DCU fans another mystery to discuss as the first season moves toward its final episodes.
The DC Studios CEO shared the message on Threads and wrote, “The blackest night is yet to come. Catch up on #Lanterns and stream new episodes Sundays on @hbomax.”
This has a connection to Green Lantern mythology. “In brightest day, in blackest night” is part of the Lantern Oath. It is also the name of the major DC Comics storyline Blackest Night. Although Gunn has not confirmed that the HBO series will adapt that storyline, his post has added fuel to several theories already circulating among DCU fans.
What has happened so far in the Lanterns TV show?
Lanterns follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska. Their case gradually exposes a larger threat involving the Manhunters.
The first five episodes have now changed the situation for both Lanterns. Zoe Macon was revealed as the Manhunter, leading to a violent confrontation in Rushville. John ultimately killed Zoe and took Hal’s ring before deciding he did not want to accept the Guardians’ offer.
Meanwhile, the show’s 2026 timeline has continued to raise questions about Hal’s fate. The midseason trailer shows John investigating Hal’s apparent death while also teasing Sinestro, Guy Gardner, and more cosmic elements. Three episodes remain in the eight-episode season.
That leaves several possible directions for Gunn’s tease. One fan theory suggests Lanterns could be laying groundwork for the Sinestro Corps, with Sinestro potentially moving toward the fear-powered Yellow Lanterns. Another theory sees the series as an early step toward a larger Blackest Night storyline involving the wider Lantern mythology.
Hal’s fate has also become part of the discussion. Some fans believe his apparent death could connect to the larger storyline Gunn is hinting at, although the series has not confirmed what ultimately happens to him.
