This is one mother of a horror film!
Jessica Chastain’s horror flick Other Mommy will certainly make audiences scream in theaters, but she says there’s a chilling larger metaphor that goes beyond the jump-scares.
“I think there’s something about the one safe harbor for a child should be their parents, and that’s the scariest thing,” she told SYFY Wire exclusively in an interview. “We all can remember what it was like to be a child, and then to not know what we can trust, and what is the truth and what’s authentic, and where is the safe place to be.
What Is Other Mommy About?
In Other Mommy, Jessica plays two roles, Ursula and “Other Mommy”—Ursula’s doppelganger and the main antagonist of the horrifying film.
The film also stars Jay Duplass as “Daddo” and Arabella Olivia Clark as their daughter “Bela.” The trailer depicts Other Mommy tormenting Daddo and Bela, as Bela struggles to understand who her real mother is and who the monster might be.
“Arabella’s performance in this is really beautiful,” Jessica said, “in that you see her trying to understand where her place is in this family.”
Jessica’s performance also got rave reviews from Jay, who told SYFY Wire his costar is “the sharpest knife in the drawer.”
“She can cut to whatever it needs to be, so quick,” he explained. “It’s genuinely helpful for everybody because—I don’t know if people know this, but it’s hard to film a horror film.”
Is Other Mommy Based on a Book?
Other Mommy is an adaptation of Bird Box author Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel, Incidents Around the House.
