Don’t call it a comeback, but has anyone else noticed that more and more comedy movies have been popping up in cinemas of late? Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, Coyote Vs. Acme, Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass, and Jackass Best And Last are just a few films that have been tickling our funny bones in recent months. And, per Deadline‘s reporting, it sounds like more blockbuster lols are heading our way as American funnyman John Mulaney is circling the role of Agent Maxwell Smart in a big-screen reboot of Mel Brooks’ spy spoof Get Smart.
Reportedly in early development with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t scribe Seth Grahame-Smith tackling the script, a Mulaney-led Get Smart would be the third cinematic outing of Mel Brooks’ legendary TV series, which followed the oftentimes calamitous exploits of the brilliant but bumbling Maxwell Smart (aka Agent 86) as he and his fellow operatives at secretive government agency Control duked it out with the villainous Kaos organisation. Originally a Don Adams starrer between 1965 and 1970, Get Smart first got the feature-length treatment in 1980 with The Nude Bomb, before later resurfacing as a Steve Carell star vehicle co-starring Anne Hathaway in 2008.
While Mulaney is perhaps best-known as a four-time Emmy winning comedian and Saturday Night Live alum, his acting chops aren’t to be underestimated: his distinctive vocal stylings have been put to effective use in Into The Spider-Verse, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, and Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers, while the Chicagoan’s IRL appearances in the likes of The Bear and Poker Face have proven very memorable. His comic acumen, coupled with the fact he’s an absolute dead ringer for OG Get Smart star Don Adams, has us very intrigued to see what becomes of Hollywood’s latest big screen spoof reboot. Here’s hoping this one’s more The Naked Gun than Scary Movie 6, eh?
