Darkly comic drama starring Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy

Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek is perfectly cast in this black comedy drama that has a split personality. When we see Murphy’s Allison with her husband Kevin, the show looks and feels like a typical US mainstream sitcom, with bright lighting and canned laughter (think The King Of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond). When she’s on her own, though, the show is more realistic, a rather bleak drama that shows the impact her ‘loveable idiot’ husband really has on his ‘long-suffering’ wife who’s the butt of all his jokes.
This sounds like quite a high-minded experiment that could have easily failed, but the overall effect is a success, even if it is at times a rather uneasy watch. Ultimately, the show lives and dies on Murphy’s performance – and she’s brilliant. She nails the switch between bubbly comedy and serious acting and, after her star-making turn in Schitt’s Creek, she flexed her dramatic muscles in series two of Nine Perfect Strangers and will do so again in upcoming Netflix thriller Poser. Expect to see a lot more from Murphy. (Two series)
