A frightening Porsche crash at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca sent a car airborne and tore through the fencing at the newly named Zanardi Corkscrew on Saturday, halting on-track activity and delaying IndyCar practice.
The crash happened during Race #1 for the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America support series, which was on track before IndyCar practice. A driver went straight off at the corkscrew, appearing to have no brakes as they approached the section.
The car immediately went airborne, nearly clearing the tire pack before slamming into the barrier and tearing completely through the fencing. It then disappeared into the trees, rolling multiple times.

Those at the scene reported that the driver, who was airlifted, was conscious. However, nothing had been confirmed by series officials at the time of the report.
The impact caused extensive damage to the barrier and fencing. Photos captured by Bill Bauman showed the fencing ripped open and folded over following the crash.
Repairs took considerable time, forcing IndyCar practice to be delayed by a full hour. When the session eventually began, it was shortened to just 25 minutes.
The crash took place at the newly named ‘Zanardi Corkscrew,’ which was officially dedicated ahead of the race weekend in honor of the late Alex Zanardi and his legendary pass for the win at Laguna Seca in 1996.
