Just days after its release, Netflix’s reboot of A Different World is a hit. The new comedy is officially the most-watched shows on streaming after hitting Netflix this September.
According to FlixPatrol, A Different World is No. 1 in the United States as of Sept. 27 and is No. 9 on Netflix globally. The reboot comes nearly 40 years after the original premiere. It ran for six seasons on NBC from 1987 to 1993 and had nearly 150 episodes. A Different World reboot premiered on Netflix on Sept. 24 with 10 episodes.
Return to Hillman College in the New Series
Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprise their roles as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne and Dwayne Wayne, respectively, from the original A Different World. Once again set at the fictional HBCU Hillman College in Virginia, the reboot centers on Dwayne and Whitley’s free-spirited and kind-hearted, yet rebellious youngest child, Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon), as she enters her freshman year at Hillman. She’s aiming to build her own legacy while having the time of her life.
“Along the way, she’s joined by a new generation that reflects the breadth of Black life on campus,” the logline reads. “Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first-gen criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five-star athlete choosing legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a sharp psych major better at fixing everyone else’s problems than facing his own; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a church raised small town girl defining her own values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his vision.”
Also returning are Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson. The reboot is created by Felicia Pride, who is known for Queen Sugar, Grey’s Anatomy, and Bel-Air.
With a return to Hillman, fans will not only recognize some of the characters, but some of the locations. An iconic Hillman hotspot has been brought back, with The Pit Diner getting a major upgrade to fit with the current times. But it’s still the college hang that people know and love, just looking a bit different.
What Critics Are Saying About A Different World
A Different World is not only doing well with the viewership, but a lot of people are loving the series. It has an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with just 17 critics’ reviews, and many critics are giving the show its flowers.
Whitney Evans of TV Fanatic wrote that the new show “does its best to live up to its predecessor, and while I’d never say it reaches the heights of the original, the new A Different World has a realness that lets it stand on its own.”
“I know it’s built on the bones of a classic, but this version feels completely rooted in the modern world,” said Mamamia’s Chelsea Hui. “It captures the current youth so accurately that Gen Z viewers are going to feel instantly seen.”
Meanwhile, Kathia Woods of Cup of Soul wrote, “The most encouraging thing about the series is that it understands legacy is not repetition. Legacy is what happens when a new generation takes what it inherited, questions it, expands it, and makes something that speaks to its own moment.”
A Different World is bringing the ‘90s back with the new reboot, and it seems to be working. Reboots and revivals are always a hit or miss, but when it comes to this one, fans and critics alike are enjoying it. And it’s possible people haven’t seen the last of the Hillman gang.
