After the news of not one, but two planned Nintendo Direct broadcasts this week, excitement among fans is reaching fever pitch. With a special showcase to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda up first, speculation is running wild.
Last week, Nintendo announced that the Zelda Direct will be broadcast at 3pm BST tomorrow (Tuesday, September 8). Nothing has been confirmed as yet, but a first look at both gameplay for the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake on Nintendo Switch 2 and next year’s Legend of Zelda live-action film are expected. However, fans have also been debating what else we’ll be given during the livestream.
While fans predict a release date for the Ocarina of Time remake and a teaser trailer for the movie, others have hoped for the return of more classic Zelda titles. Reddit users excitedly speculating over the content of the Zelda Direct have revealed their biggest hopes for the showcase.
One wrote: “So, Twilight Princess for Nintendo Switch Online, anyone?” Plenty were in agreement, with some admitting it was a “blindspot” and the only Zelda game they haven’t played.
Another replied: “I’ll raise you. Let’s aspire for Wind Waker HD AND Twilight Princess HD instead of dreaming of never owning games.”
A third posted: “So, it’s for Zelda’s overall 40th Anniversary which means not only are we getting OoT remake news, but our first look at the movie, Zelda games which are likely coming to NSO, and maybe a surprise like maybe Twilight Princess’s remaster gets ported to the Switch.”
The Ocarina of Time remake was confirmed during June’s Nintendo Direct. At the time, all that was revealed was a short teaser trailer, a release window, and a drastically overhauled art style.
The exact release date is set to be confirmed, and likely will be during the Zelda Direct. At the moment, all that is certain is that it’ll arrive by the time 2026 comes to a close.
We’re also waiting on confirmation of a collector’s edition and limited edition Switch 2 console to tie-in with the anniversary and release of the remake. Recent leaks point to Xenoblade Chronicles developers Monolith Soft being involved in its creation.
As for the Zelda movie, casting details have slowly emerged over recent months. Joining Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda are the likes of Dichen Lachman, Uli Latukefu and the late Sam Neill.
Directed by Wes Ball, the film finished shooting in April this year, and is set for theatrical release on April 30, 2027. Shot on location in New Zealand, the film’s exact plot is yet to be revealed – but we may learn more during the next Nintendo Direct.
