Spooky drama starring Michael Palin and Jodie Comer

In what was his first dramatic leading role since Alan Bleasdale’s GBH in 1991, Michael Palin lead the cast of this atmospheric ghost story, set in present-day Yorkshire. He plays crotchety Tom Parfitt, a vulnerable man of ’80-odd’, whose admission to a care home following a carefully staged ‘accident’ is, he tells young nurse Hannah (Jodie Comer), the ‘best day of my life’. But it becomes just the opposite, when, soon after his arrival, a bemused Tom witnesses a violent incident that results in a woman’s death. Before long, Hannah and detective Rob Fairholme (Mark Addy) start to realise that there’s something rather strange about Tom.
As the ghostly goings-on intensify over three episodes, the show makes superb use of its locations, notably the seaside town of Scarborough, and while the pace dips in the middle episode, the finale is well worth the wait. (Three episodes)
