The new Resident Evil movie is already a major success, debuting to high box office earnings along with immense critical acclaim. Be that as it may, there are some fans who want to see the “Cregger Cut” of the film, with all of the cut comedic material restored.
Ahead of the release of Resident Evil, director Zach Cregger shared that the original cut had a lot more comedy. When test screening viewers noted that the film was “too funny,” Cregger removed most of the jokes. After watching the film, some fans said they were eager to see the original cut. However, Cregger doesn’t appear to have any interest in releasing that version of the movie, feeling much more satisfied with the final theatrical cut that filmgoers can watch now on the big screen.
Zach Cregger Regrets Nothing About the Theatrical Cut
“It was the right move,” Cregger said about cutting the jokes, per IGN. “It’s funny; I saw somebody online was like, ‘Release the Cregger Cut!’ I’m like, ‘No, this is the Cregger Cut.’ The Cregger Cut is this without those jokes in it. It’s fun to have moments of levity, but it needs to be a horror movie first and foremost, so I don’t miss any of them.”
Cregger previously told THR that “there’s not a single joke” cut from the film that he misses. That all but rules out a special director’s cut of the movie being released. Still, the possibility remains that a home entertainment release will include some or all of the scenes that were trimmed from the theatrical cut. In any case, Cregger probably feels more certain than before that he made the right call, given the movie’s reception.
Resident Evil Has Impressed the Critics
On Rotten Tomatoes, Resident Evil holds an approval rating of 96%, the highest of any feature film of the franchise. The audience score was almost just as high at 91%. It has already made over $108 million at the worldwide box office, surpassing the amount of its $75 million production budget. Many critics have declared the film to be the best video game adaptation ever made. Cregger has also been praised for bringing something new to Resident Evil while still honoring the games.
“What Cregger’s created here, and what future filmmakers tasked with playing in RE‘s sandbox should aim to make in the future, is a fun, frightening, and unique story that is both completely RE and completely the vision of its director,” CBR’s review of the film states. “It’s the kind of movie that reminds us why we choose, time and time again, to enter Resident Evil‘s world of survival horror.”
In the movie, Austin Abrams plays a medical courier transporting an important delivery to a Raccoon City hospital when he finds himself caught up in the midst of a major viral outbreak that’s turning the city’s residents into bloodthirsty creatures. Paul Walter Hauser and Keli Reis also star.
Resident Evil is now playing in movie theaters.
