Sainsbury’s shoppers issued urgent ‘do not eat’ warning after harmful bacteria found in product

The harmful bacteria can cause illness such as a high temperature, aches and pains, and nausea and vomiting

Sainsbury’s has issued an urgent “do not eat” warning for a snack product after because Listeria monocytogenes was found in the food.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of pathogenic bacteria that causes listeriosis, which is a rare infection that can cause a high temperature, aches and pains, chills, feeling or being sick, and diarrhoea, according to the NHS.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an urgent recall for ‘Inspired to Cook by Sainsbury’s Pitted Black Olives’ due to the presence Listeria monocytogenes.

Although listeriosis is not usually serious, it can be higher risk for those who are pregnant, newborn babies, or those with weakened immune systems.

Anyone who has bought the affected product has been warned “do not eat it”. Instead they should return it to their nearest Sainsbury’s store in exchange for a full refund.

The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. This can either be that the product has been “withdrawn”, which means taken off the shelves, or “recalled”, when customers are urged to return the product.
