There’s always a movie like this that pops up on the schedule.
This year, it’s “Maserati: The Brothers,” directed by Bobby Moresco, who I knew some 30 years ago from a short-lived TV series called “EZ Streets,” and Lorenzo Carcaterra’s infamously not-non fiction book and movie, “Sleepers.” More importantly, Moresco shared an Oscar for writing “Crash” with Paul Haggis.
Moresco knows his way around an automobile biopic. In 2022, he directed “Lamborghini,” but that went wheels up with just a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a total box office of $1.3 million from international venues. In the US, it’s unclear if it was released.
“Maserati” has a total of 36 producers, which is less than some other outlier films. Andrea Iervolino is the lead, well known abroad for making highly unwatchable movies we don’t see in the US along with his backer, Monika Bacardi, of the liquor brand. He also made Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” so “Maserati” is his hat trick. As for Bacardi, I notice that her name is not on the new movie’s long list of producers, which is why so many others may be involved in the financing.
“Maserati” looks like it will be the grand opera of Iervolino movies. Who knows? It could be great. No one knows because it hasn’t been screened. It also will be self-distributed, no studios are involved, so far not even Lions Gate which took on “Lamborghini.”
So we rev our engines, and wait and see what happens. Of course, with that cast, what could go wrong? It seems like a no-brainer.
