Disney+ has officially ordered a new animated series. It will bring the classic Disney superhero back to screens with a new cast led by Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen, and Kathryn Newton.
According to Disney+, Darkwing Duck is executive produced by Sean Tretta. The 49-year-old is known for Star Trek: Picard, and Borja Peña Gorostegui, who worked on Lost & Crowned. Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures is producing alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham.
Tad Stones, who created the original Darkwing Duck series, returns as a creative consultant. The original show ran for 91 episodes after debuting in 1991 and followed Drake Mallard, a crime-fighting duck who operated as Darkwing Duck.
Hamill will voice both Drake and his superhero alter ego. Rogen will voice Darkwing’s loyal sidekick, Launchpad McQuack. The cast also includes Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, Lilimar as the new character Duckie, and Newton as Firecracker.
Other voice cast members include Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
What to expect from the new show’s story?
The new series begins with Drake facing a very different problem from the villains he once fought. After spending 35 years trapped in an alternate dimension, the former hero has become almost completely forgotten. Nobody in the new reality knows who Darkwing Duck is or remembers his past adventures.
That changes when Duckie, a rebellious teenager from Drake’s original reality, arrives. Duckie eventually convinces Drake to return to his crime-fighting life. Their journey soon becomes much bigger when a threat to the multiverse emerges.
The story reunites Drake with Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Morgana Macawber. It also brings back some of Darkwing’s most recognizable enemies.
Megavolt will return, along with Darkwing’s main rival, Negaduck. The new series will mix superhero action, comedy, and the characters that helped make the original show popular.
