A popular Irish pub in Solihull is preparing to temporarily shut its doors next month. The move follows approval from planners for an extensive makeover.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service previously revealed that O’Neills in Solihull town centre lodged a planning application with Solihull Council back in June. The Poplar Road establishment sought authorisation to transform the exterior beam colours on the building’s frontage to green and install fresh signage featuring the pub’s name alongside ‘Arrowsmith’s Digital Darts ‘.
At the back of the premises, the green colour scheme is set to continue, complemented by a new mural declaring: “Guinness for darts, bullseye!’ Visual representations of the planned changes were included in the application.

Throughout the consultation phase, Solihull heritage officers, who raised no concerns, stated: “The public house is a building of architectural interest which occupies a prominent position on a gateway to the town centre.
“The building itself makes a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the conservation area. The general upgrading of this area is welcomed and the muted green and white palette is acceptable. “
According to the council’s website, Mark Andrews, the council’s head of planning, design and engagement services, formally approved the proposals on August 3, with certain conditions attached to the planning permission. Among the stipulations is: “Any advertisements displayed and any site used for the display of advertisements shall be maintained in a condition that does not impair the visual amenity of the site.”
O’Neills has been publicising the renovation across its social media platforms and, on August 24, announced via Facebook: “The secret’s out. Just us for our closing weekend party as we say goodbye to the old and get ready for what’s new.
“Last day of trade September 7, reopening September 25. Stay tuned – exciting things are coming.”
