The first full trailer for Mike Flanagan’s Carrie has arrived, and this looks like exactly the kind of Stephen King adaptation I want to see from the filmmaker.
Prime Video has released a new trailer for its upcoming eight-episode series, giving us our best look yet at Flanagan’s new take on Carrie White and the brutal path that leads her toward one horrific night.
The series stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a young woman dealing with cruelty, pressure, isolation, and a world that seems determined to push her to the breaking point.
The official synopsis offers some insight into how Flanagan’s adaptation will expand King’s story: “a revealing glimpse at how the series expands the world, bringing new depth and complexity to its beloved characters while exploring the forces that shape Carrie White as she navigates the cruelty and pressure of the modern world — building toward a single, shattering night. But how much do we really know about Carrie — or what happened in Chamberlain?”
This version of Carrie is based on Stephen King’s iconic 1974 debut novel, which has already made its way to the screen several times.
The most famous adaptation remains Carrie, Brian De Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta. It was followed by The Rage: Carrie 2 in 1999 with Emily Bergl, while the story was adapted again in 2013 with Chloë Grace Moretz. There was also a 2002 TV movie starring Angela Bettis and Patricia Clarkson.
Flanagan now gets his shot at the material, and the longer format gives him a lot more room to explore Carrie, her relationships, and the people who help shape what ultimately happens to her.
Howell is joined by Samantha Sloyan (The Pitt) as Margaret White, Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton (Fire Country) as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette (My Life with the Walter Boys) as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah (The Buccaneers) as Tina, Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) as Billy, Thalia Dudek (The Running Man) as Emaline, Amber Midthunder (Prey) as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard (Man of Tomorrow) as Principal Grayle.
The recurring guest cast includes Michael Trucco (Fire Country), Crystal Balint (The Fall of the House of Usher), Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House), Rahul Kohli (We Were Liars), Tim Bagley (The Comeback), and Heather Graham (The White Lotus).
Flanagan directed episodes one, two, seven, and eight, while Siegel directed episodes three through six. King is also involved with the series as an executive producer.
I’m incredibly excited to see what Flanagan does with Carrie. He’s one of the best filmmakers working in Hollywood right now, especially when it comes to character-driven horror.
His work on The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher has shown that he understands how to build strong stories around complicated characters without losing the horror that brought audiences in.
King’s material also fits Flanagan extremely well. He understands these stories and the emotional weight underneath the supernatural horror, and Carrie gives him plenty to work with. Judging from this trailer, he’s found a compelling way to revisit a story horror fans know while giving it enough room to become something of its own.
This looks great, and I’m absolutely in for it. Carrie premieres exclusively on Prime Video on October 7.
