If you’re looking for a cosy Christmas stay just over the road from one of our most festive squares, add this to your list.
Each Christmas, Birmingham has two excellent festive markets in the city centre, each offering something different.
The most famous, the Frankfurt Christmas Market, turns New Street and Victoria Square into a German-themed party, all weissbier and bratwurst.
But round on the pretty Cathedral Square, the market is filled with local makers and creatives. And right over the road there’s a magical festive hotel for cosy Christmas sleepovers.

The Grand Hotel is the most luxe in the city, acting as a home for superstars when they come to town.
And especially for Christmas, it has transformed three of its suites into ‘festive wonderlands’ for guests.
From November 2 (the German Market begins November 5!) until December 31, festive decor and special installations will adorn the rooms including pretty Christmas trees.
Bookings are now open for the rooms, which have been transformed in partnership with professional festive firm Light Up Christmas.
Each suite has a classic vintage theme; A ‘Mulled Wine’ suite in luxurious burgundy shades with dried oranges, clove pomanders, cinnamon stick bundles, star anise and berries to fragrance the room; a ‘Florals… For Christmas?’ suite filled with flowers; and a Charles Dickens-themed room.
It’s befitting for the city given Charles Dickens read A Christmas Carol for the first time right here in Birmingham.
The Grand Hotel first opened in 1879 and has bags of classic Victorian style already, with sparkling glass and Bordeaux-coloured decor.
Johan Scheepers, general manager of The Grand Hotel Birmingham, said: “Beyond the doors of the hotel, Birmingham comes alive each Christmas, with festive markets, glittering shopping streets, as well as the best dining, music and theatre, all just moments away.
“It seems only fitting that we lean into the festive cheer, offering guests the ultimate festive escape during their stay.”
Louise Walsh, co-founder of Light Up Christmas, added: “It’s all about teamwork and organisation – we’ve worked with The Grand Hotel Birmingham, year on year, and each time we love to experiment with new ways to fuse current trends with classic Christmas traditions.
“We can’t wait to bring the festive magic and see our designs spring to life as guests begin to stay in the suites.”
Suites are now available to book.
This Christmas, a new attraction is opening at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery that will make things even more magical.
