Yash-starrer “Toxic” has turned out to be a major disappointment at the box office, with the film struggling across languages. Made on a massive budget, the Geetu Mohandas directorial was released in theatres on August 26 in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam.
Interestingly, “Toxic” was shot in both Kannada and English, with the latter version dubbed into several Indian languages. Yash had reportedly envisioned the English version as a way of taking the film to a wider global audience and creating a new trend in Indian cinema.
However, the experiment appears to have failed to make an impact. After receiving heavy criticism and trolling in the Indian-language versions, the English version, which was released yesterday, has also had a poor start.
The English version reportedly earned just Rs 1 lakh on its first day. The disappointing response has led to criticism on social media, with some calling the English-language version an unnecessary effort and questioning the money and time spent on it.
Yash had massive expectations riding on “Toxic” following the phenomenal success of “KGF 2”. He reportedly hoped that the film would help establish him as a bigger pan-India and global star. However, the film’s poor reception has made that ambition difficult to achieve with this project.
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, “Toxic” is a gangster drama that takes a psychological-thriller route. The film features Nayanthara, Rukmini Vasanth, Kiara Advani and Tara Sutaria in key roles.
