Multiple sources have reported the death of UK hip-hop artist Sway.
Born Derek Andrew Safo, Sway came of age in Hornsey, North London, infatuated with music from a young age. Drawn to the UK hip-hop scene as the 90s turned into the 00s, becoming the first rapper to win a MOBO Award without releasing an album.
When his debut album did come, Sway did it his way – independently released, ‘This Is My Demo’ sold over 50,000 and gained a co-sign from Pharrell Williams, amongst others, firmly putting his sound on the map internationally.
Working continuously as a songwriter, producer, and rapper, Swap also helmed the Dcypha imprint, platforming underground voices in the process.
News of Sway’s death broke online earlier today – he celebrated his 44h birthday only a few weeks ago.
UK rapper Lowkey posted a tribute: “We stand on the shoulders of giants and Sway the pioneer is one of them.”
The MOBO Awards said: “Proud to have him as part of our history. Our love goes out to his family, loved ones and fans.”
