Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed 10-part WWII drama is based on a true story and fans say it’s ‘one of the greatest TV series ever made’ – even after 25 years
Devoted war drama enthusiasts on the hunt for their next binge-worthy series are being urged to head over to HBO Max to stream what many are calling the “greatest TV series of all time”.
A couple named Max and Skylar, who often shared their top recommendations for films and TV shows to watch, have been championing a World War II miniseries on HBO Max, which they insist is one of the finest limited series ever made – and is based on a true story. Despite the TV series in question premiering 25 years ago, it’s still considered by many to be among the greatest ever produced, created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
“If we could only recommend one show about World War II, it would be this HBO series,” they declared at the opening of their video. The series in question is Band of Brothers, which follows the men of Easy Company.
What is Band of Brothers about?
The series documents the journey of Easy Company, part of the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, spanning from 1942 through to the conclusion of World War II, and draws from historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 non-fiction book bearing the same title.
It begins during the unit’s paratrooper training before tracking their involvement across the Western Front of World War II, from D-Day through to their seizure of Hitler’s mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden.
The story is based on Ambrose’s extensive research and recorded testimonies from Easy Company veterans.
“With unbelievable production value and stellar acting and writing, it’s a show that stays with you long after it’s over,” the couple said. “Particularly because we get to see interviews with the real men from East Company.”
Every episode opens with extracts from interviews featuring some of the survivors, whose identities are revealed by name only during the finale’s closing moments.
Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg had previously collaborated on the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan, from which the series borrowed many of its visual elements and production staff. The pair have subsequently partnered on additional war dramas, including The Pacific (2010) and Masters of the Air (2024).
Band of Brothers also features notable performances from actors including David Schwimmer as Captain Sobel, Tom Hardy as Private John Janovec, and Damian Lewis, whose portrayal of U.S. Army Major Richard Winters earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
The series ultimately secured seven Emmy Awards from a total of 20 nominations. It also claimed a Golden Globe, alongside numerous other prestigious awards.
It remains a highly praised TV series to this day, boasting an impressive rating of 9.4 out of 10 on IMDb, and an impressive 97 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics hailing it ‘the best TV series of all time’.
All episodes of Band of Brothers can be streamed on HBO Max.
