‘Twas a dark and stormy Monday night when, as all here in Blighty slumbered on, The Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles played host to the 78th Annual Emmy Awards as the stars of the past year’s biggest shows put on their gladrags for a night of glitz, glamour, and gongs. And on a historic evening, which saw Welshman Matthew Rhys become the first actor ever to win two leading actor Emmys in one evening, Apple TV’s spooky comedy Widow’s Bay emerged as the night’s surprise victor, winning a whopping 14 of the 19 awards it was nominated for — including Outstanding Comedy, Best Actor In A Comedy Series for Rhys, Outstanding Writing for Katie Dippold, and Outstanding Directing for Hiro Murai.
A great night for the folks at Apple not only saw Widow’s Bay take The Studio‘s crown as the most awarded single season of a comedy series, but also Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn finally receiving some much-deserved Emmys love, with the duo taking Outstanding Writing and Best Actress In A Drama Series for noodle-twisting sci-fi epic Pluribus. Elsewhere at the ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay and featuring a surprise pre-taped appearance from Taylor Swift, Jean Smart took home another acting gong for Hacks‘ final season, while Allison Janney, Noah Wyle, Tom Pelphrey, and Sally Field also all won big for The Diplomat, The Pitt, Task, and Remarkably Bright Creatures respectively. Matthew Rhys’ Limited Series acting win for The Beast In Me, alongside his Widow’s Bay success, also makes him the first actor to have won in all three major Emmy acting categories. He previously won Best Actor in A Drama Series for The Americans.
