An infection spread across the world this weekend as TriStar Pictures/Constantin Film/Davis Films’ Resident Evil debuted to a franchise-best $108.3 at the global box-office.
We called Zach Cregger’s reboot of the Capcom videogame series “exhilarating, electric fun” in our ★★★★ review, and it appears that cinemagoers around the world agreed. The Austin Abram’s headlined horror grossed $60 million at the domestic box office, and $48.3 million overseas, for an expectation exceeding $108.3 million.
That’s the best start the series has seen, obliterating Sony’s previous attempt at rebooting the game with 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City, which was a critical and commercial dud, finishing its run with just $42 million worldwide.
It helps that Cregger was orchestrating the zombie action, with many people turning up to a franchise that has delivered solid box office figures, but largely forgettable cut-scene action movies, largely based on his growing reputation. Following his breakout success with 2022’s Barbarian, and last year’s $270 million grossing Weapons, the director is fast becoming a name that audiences will attribute with quality filmmaking

Elsewhere in the Top 10, Practical Magic 2’s spell wore off quickly, dropping to second with $12 million. The Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock sequel took its tally to $49 million. Add that to a meagre overseas cume of just $26.8 million, and Warner Bros. will be doing well to make much wonga from these returning witches.
