74 Years Later, Florence Pugh’s Star-Studded Remake of a Masterpiece Arrives on Netflix in 2 Weeks

Adaptations are nothing new for Netflix, especially in the case of video games and books. The streaming powerhouse has numerous adaptations under its belt and currently in the works, many of which have never been adapted before or haven’t been adapted in decades. For the upcoming Florence Pugh-led East of Eden adaptation, the latter is true. What originated as a 1952 novel written by John Steinbeck, then became a 1955 film and 1981 miniseries, is now being adapted by Netflix into a seven-episode miniseries debuting Oct. 1.

This novel, which is widely regarded as Steinbeck’s magnum opus, tells the story of two intertwined families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons — and serves as a mirror of the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Primarily, the book focuses on Adam and Cathy Trask, their twin sons, and the chaos that ensues between all of them. If done well, this adaptation could be one of Netflix’s best yet, and it would continue solidifying Pugh as one of the most standout actors of her generation. Given the plethora of incredible world-building and storytelling Netflix has to work with, along with the impressive and star-studded cast of characters, East of Eden should be an instant classic.

East of Eden Joins Netflix’s Continuously Growing Roster of Book Adaptations

With Little House on the Prairie, Lord of the Flies, and now East of Eden all coming out in 2026 alone, Netflix is becoming the home of classic literature adaptations — and that shows no signs of slowing down. (The streamer’s Narnia remake is also on the horizon in 2027.) Originally announced in 2022, the East of Eden miniseries is being adapted by Zoe Kazan, writer of Ruby Sparks and co-writer of Wildlife, whose grandfather actually directed the film adaptation of the novel in 1955. The miniseries is directed by Garth Davis, director of Lion, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre. Pugh serves as an executive producer in addition to starring.

Pugh will portray the villainous Cathy Trask, alongside Christopher Abbott as her husband Adam Trask; Mike Faist as Adam’s brother, Charles Trask; and Hoon Lee as the Trask family’s servant turned confidant, Lee. Pugh and Abbott may not have shared the screen prior to this project, but they are set to share the same cinematic universe, with Pugh playing the role of Yelena Belova and Abbott being cast as Professor X in the MCU. Faist is best known for his roles as Art Donaldson in Challengers and Riff in West Side Story, while Lee is best known for his roles as Wang Chao in Warrior and Barney Choi in Your Friends and Neighbors.

This cast, alongside all the other supporting members, should have no problem bringing East of Eden to life. That’s especially true of Pugh, who is no stranger to nailing a period piece performance after projects like Little Drummer Girl, Little Women, and even Oppenheimer.

As a novel, East of Eden is a literary masterpiece. It’s exceptionally powerful and touches on everything from the ever-changing impact of loss, both in self and in love, to the complicated path that many people must travel in order to find their true identity. If the Netflix adaptation can incorporate these themes and build on them in ways that help the overall story, not hurt it, I think we could definitely see it become a major success.

Based on the trailer alone, East of Eden looks to be a worthy adaptation of the novel, and I’m increasingly excited to watch it unfold come October. If anything, I know Pugh will deliver a gripping and unmatched performance as Cathy/Kate. That alone is reason enough for me to tune in, but the stunning backdrops and clear production quality are also enticing.
