Last year, Deafheaven released their album Lonely People With Power. It was heavy, and it was also great. In the many years since they first came to internet prominence, Deafheaven have had a complicated relationship with the extreme metal underground that birthed then, and they seem to be fully embracing intensity right now. In fact, they apparently have a new EP in the works, and guitarist Kerry McCoy identifies it as “the heaviest thing” they’ve ever done.
Deafheaven are about to head out on a big tour with Mastodon and Alcest. Kerry McCoy recently gave an interview to the Spanish website Binaural that gets into his past and the band’s immediate future plans. Keeping in mind that his words in that interview have presumably been translated into Spanish and then back into English, the quotes that he gave about a mysterious upcoming Deafheaven EP aren’t exact. But you can get the basic gist.
In that interview, McCoy mentions a new record in the works: “It will come out soon. I don’t know if I can tell when… before the end of the year. It’s an EP, I can say that.” Later in the interview, McCoy says that the EP is “much heavier” than Lonely People With Power, that “by far, it is the heaviest” and “the hardest” thing that the bade has ever made. He also says, “It is, without a doubt, the closest thing to black metal we have ever done.” So there you go, another reason to get up in the morning. Read the full interview here.
