I put own-brand mayonnaise from Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury’s to the test against Hellmann’s
Mayonnaise remains a kitchen essential across British homes. Whether dolloped in sandwiches, paired with chips, or drizzled over salads, it’s a versatile favourite.
The supermarket aisles offer no shortage of choice when selecting a jar of mayo. From household names to supermarket alternatives, there’s plenty to pick from, with most major retailers stocking their own versions.
While Hellmann’s enjoys widespread popularity, own-brand alternatives typically offer better value for money. Curious to discover whether any budget options could match Hellmann’s for quality and price, I put mayonnaise from Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco and Marks and Spencer to the test. The findings proved rather unexpected.
Tesco – 86p
Landing at the bottom of the table was Tesco’s version, which didn’t quite hit the mark flavour-wise. The overwhelming sharpness of vinegar dominated the flavour, masking any others.
Rating: 2/10
Lidl – 95p
Lidl’s entry stood out as the palest of the selection and delivered a rather acidic note. While the texture was satisfyingly smooth, it fell short on depth of flavour, proving its downfall.
Rating: 3/10
Sainsbury’s – 89p
Boasting the densest consistency, Sainsbury’s mayo appeared noticeably lighter in shade. It delivered a robust taste with good character, making it ideal for anyone after a substantial salad topping.
Rating: 6/10
Hellmann’s – £2.75 from Tesco
The household name lives up to its reputation for a reason. Luxuriously smooth with an expertly judged harmony of sweet and sharp notes. The sauce also has an excellent consistency.
Rating: 8/10
Aldi – 95p
In my view, Aldi’s mayonnaise was virtually identical in taste to Hellmann’s, matching its richness and well-rounded flavour profile. For those on the lookout for a wallet-friendly alternative to the branded option, this condiment is a brilliant choice.
Rating: 8/10
Marks and Spencer – £1.20
Marks and Spencer secured second place with its own-brand offering. This condiment stood out noticeably from the rest of the taste test contenders, though in a rather pleasing way.
It was remarkably light and airy, with a lovely tang and smoothness. For those who favour a less dense, lighter mayonnaise, this is without doubt the standout choice.
Rating: 9/10
Asda – 96p
Asda stormed to the top of the rankings. Its colour, depth of flavour and velvety smooth texture made it stand above the rest.
It delivered a satisfying tang you’d expect from a top-quality mayonnaise, and will have you reaching straight for the chips. The flavour was spot on, and at considerably less than Hellmann’s, it’s a clear champion.
Rating: 10/10
