A Leicester city centre pasta bar suffered “significant” damage after being hit by a devastating burglary.
Makaron, in the city’s King Street, was targeted in the early hours of last Thursday (October 1). While no items were taken in the burglary, much damage was caused to the pasta bar, with hobs and fans broken while glass was smashed over the floor.
David Dervish, one of Makaron’s workers, had gone to investigate the reported burglary after being alerted to it, but did not realise the perpetrator was still in the building when he arrived.
The 25-year-old told LeicestershireLive: “I got a call from the security company around 1am and was told that the motion sensors had gone off.
“When I arrived, I saw that one of our extractor fans was on the floor and the damage looked quite bad. I was unsure at the start whether to enter the premises due to thinking that someone may be inside, but I entered anyway, not thinking much of it.
“I went back home and it was in the morning, around 7am that I got another call from the security company, which told me that it was a break-in and that they had footage of the person on the cameras.
“I then realised, he must have still been in the store when I quickly popped in to see what had tripped the motion sensors. I was shocked. He must have stayed really quiet and waited for me to leave and that’s when he made his exit.”
Mr Dervish said the burglary had left the restaurant with “significant” damage.
He said: “The person broke our fan, there was glass all over the floor and one of the hobs was smashed as well so there was significant damage.
“This is the third time this has happened to the store, so something needs to done for sure. We need more police around the area because it isn’t just us, others have reported being broken into a lot too.”
Leicestershire Police, which said it was contacted about the burglary, said enquiries are ongoing and if anyone has any information which may assist, they should call 101, quoting crime number 26*588786.
