Focusing on a pivotal year in the F1 star’s career
Year: 2026
Certificate: 12
Every generation of Formula 1 has its stars and Michael Schumacher still looms as one of its biggest, despite having retired (for the second time) in 2012. The German started in more than 300 Grands Prix and won 91, and more than half his races resulted in a podium finish.
Schumacher didn’t come from a rich background, either, unlike so many F1 drivers. Young Michael’s father was a bricklayer, although he did also happen to run the local kart track, where his mum worked in the canteen. At the age of six, Michael won his first kart championship.
That was undoubtedly a formative moment but the business of this documentary is 1994, the year Schumacher won his first (of seven) Drivers’ Championships. It was a season jam-packed with controversy – including accusations of foul play that were levelled at the German.
Produced with the backing of the Schumacher family and hearing extensively from his wife Corinna, it’s a peek beneath the cool surface of the driver at a time of great emotional turmoil, all presented as if it were happening right now. Damon Hill, the British driver who was a close and fierce rival of Schumacher across that season, does not appear – except in archive footage. Read into that what you will. (105 minutes)
